Side event: UN Plastics Treaty: Reuse – a Climate and Plastic Solution

The side event will focus on the consideration of plastic packaging reuse, including the importance of design and performance standards and criteria, in the context of negotiations for a legally binding instrument which are ongoing pursuant to UNEA5’s resolution. In a not-so-distant past plastic reuse was the norm but we have let it vanish. Let’s react: reuse systems can lead to 90% reduction in packaging production and up to 80% in related climate emission reduction compared to single-use options. Standards are crucial to ensure social and environmental performance and to scale these systems globally. The side event will also discuss possible financial mechanisms and will make recommendations for the consideration of INC4 and INC5.
